The State of Alaska faced challenges with its legacy on-premises infrastructure, which was complex, inefficient, and costly. Additionally, the state's vast geography made it difficult to provide consistent digital services. To overcome these issues and innovate in public services, Alaska contracted with Microsoft to enhance modernization, security, and workforce development, aiming to improve access to digital services and increase transparency and collaboration across departments.

In the first phase of the migration, Alaska successfully migrated 1,200 servers and 700 applications to Microsoft Azure within just three months. This rapid transition was part of a broader strategy to modernize the state's infrastructure and improve the delivery of government services.

Since migrating to Azure, Alaska has experienced enhanced resilience and reliability of its systems, improved security, and greater transparency across departments. The state has also reduced costs by consolidating infrastructure and decommissioning legacy systems, allowing for better access to data and services for residents, particularly those in remote areas.
